When Evelyn read that sentence aloud, the room went silent.
Riker’s hands closed around the arms of his chair.

She paused.

I am no longer responsible for protecting people from the consequences of hearing the truth.”
The video spread farther than the edited clip had.
Not because Riker forced anyone to share it.
Because Lily was believable.
She did not sound triumphant.
She did not threaten Derek.
She did not turn herself into a symbol.
She simply told the truth.
Three days later, Harrow Development announced that it had suspended its relationship with Vale Consulting pending an internal investigation.
City officials delayed the waterfront vote while procurement lawyers reviewed possible interference in the bidding process.
Marcus Vale retained counsel.
Derek was charged in connection with the mall assault.
The broader investigation into the planned recording and payments continued, with Vanessa cooperating through her attorney.
None of it looked like the fantasy revenge Lily might once have imagined.
There were no dramatic disappearances.
No secret basement.
No command from Riker that ended a man’s life.
There were statements, evidence logs, lawyers, court dates, preserved messages, and people discovering that a camera could protect the person it had been intended to humiliate.
Riker kept his promise too.
Derek and Vanessa were removed from the guest lists and memberships of businesses privately controlled by Cross companies where management had the legal right to refuse them access.

When Jonah asked whether Riker wanted Derek’s professional life investigated, Riker looked at Lily first.
She shook her head.
