Derek had not simply seen his former girlfriend and decided to humiliate her.
Someone had known who she was married to.
Someone had known Riker would come if she was hurt.
And someone had counted on his reputation doing the rest.
The only unpredictable part had been Riker himself.
He had not struck Derek.
He had not ordered his men to touch him.
He had not threatened to kill him.
He had made Derek apologize and honored Lily’s request to ban him from private businesses.
That was still intimidating when edited carefully, but it was not the explosion someone had apparently wanted.
“They needed him angry,” Lily whispered.
Evelyn nodded.
“And they used you as the match.”
Riker stood so abruptly the chair legs scraped the floor.
Lily looked up.
His face was frighteningly calm.
“Riker.”
He stopped.
“Daylight,” she reminded him.
His jaw worked once.
Then he sat back down.
“Daylight,” he agreed.
By evening, the public story had begun to change.
The police did not release evidence, but the mall issued a short statement confirming that an assault had occurred before the confrontation shown in the viral clip and that complete security footage had been preserved for investigators.
Several witnesses independently uploaded their own recordings.
One showed Derek kicking Lily.
Another captured Vanessa laughing.
A third contained the crucial whisper about filming Cross when he arrived.
The edited video was no longer the only version people could see.
Derek’s carefully constructed role as innocent victim collapsed by the hour.
But the legal problem was only beginning.
The next morning, Evelyn obtained permission from Lily to provide investigators with old financial records she had kept from her relationship with Derek.
Lily had never pursued charges for the money he took from her years ago.
At the time, she had been ashamed of how completely he controlled their shared accounts.
Now she opened an old encrypted folder on her laptop.
There were bank statements.
Screenshots.
Messages.
One from Derek read, “Your money is our money when I need it.
Stop acting selfish.”
Another threatened to throw out her belongings if she changed her banking password.
Lily stared at those words for a long time.
Riker sat across the room, silent.
He did not tell her what to feel.
He did not ask why she had stayed.
Finally she said, “I used to read these and think they proved how stupid I was.”
“What do they prove now?”
She considered the question.
“That I kept records.”
Riker’s eyes warmed.
“Exactly.”
The break came that afternoon.
Vanessa’s attorney contacted prosecutors and requested a meeting.
She had realized that Derek’s version of events was contradicted by several cameras and that the alleged setup could expose her to consequences far beyond posting an embarrassing video.
Vanessa began talking.
