Halfway through the meal, Emily’s fork slipped from her hand.

Clink.

Her shoulders locked.

Then she took a slow breath, bent beneath the table, and picked it up herself.

When she sat upright, there were tears in her eyes.

But she was smiling.

“I’m okay, Mom,” she said.

This time, it sounded like yes.

I reached across the table and held her hand.

The house was quiet around us.
