“I brought him here.

I put you in danger.”

“No.

He brought danger with him.

You brought it somewhere people could see it.”

That was the first moment she looked at me as if she might believe she had not caused what happened.

At the hospital, a nurse documented bruises in different stages of healing.

There were marks on Emily’s upper arms, a healing cut near her ankle, and swelling across the top of the foot Caleb had pinned beneath the table.

When the nurse asked how long it had been happening, Emily looked toward the closed examination-room door.

“Four months,” she said.

Then she corrected herself.

“Maybe longer.

I just didn’t understand what it was at first.”

Caleb had begun with small corrections.

He disliked one of her friends because she was supposedly jealous.

He thought Emily’s supervisor took advantage of her.

He said her apartment was unsafe, her clothes attracted the wrong attention, and her social-media accounts invited disrespect.

Each demand arrived disguised as concern.

He offered to manage her schedule because she was tired.

He asked for her phone password because committed couples should have no secrets.

He convinced her to deposit her paychecks into an account he controlled so they could save for a house.

When she resisted, he became wounded rather than angry.

“After everything I do for you,” he would say, “why are you determined to make us fail?”

By the time the anger became visible, he had separated her from almost everyone who might have named it.

He made her quit her job after accusing a coworker of flirting with her.

He moved her into his house outside Austin and kept one set of keys.

He monitored the mileage on her car.

He checked the trash, her call history, and even the amount of shampoo in the bottle when she returned from visiting me.

I had noticed changes, but Caleb always provided an explanation before Emily could speak.

She was tired.

She was busy.

She had changed her diet.

She was becoming more mature.

The word he used most often was structure.

At the hospital, Emily finally told us what the bandage on her ankle covered.

Two nights earlier, she had tried to leave while Caleb was asleep.

He had placed a small metal tracker beneath the lining of her purse.

When he found her at a gas station, he dragged her back to the car and shoved her leg against the door frame.

He did not take her to dinner at my house because he wanted to meet me.

He took her because she had begged for one final visit and promised she would announce their engagement.

The cream dress had been his choice.

The lipstick had been his choice.

Even the flowers had been purchased with Emily’s debit card.

But the note had been hers.

She had written it in the bathroom with eyeliner while Caleb stood outside the door asking why she was taking so long.

She taped it to her leg because he searched her purse, her coat pockets, and her phone before they left his house.

“I knew you would watch me,” she said.

“I hoped you would see something.”

The detective assigned to the case asked whether she had any proof beyond the injuries and the 911 recording.

Emily hesitated.

Then she asked for her purse.

The officer who had collected it brought it into the room.

Emily felt along the inside seam until her fingers found a small tear in the lining.

From the space between the fabric and the leather, she pulled an old phone wrapped in a plastic bag.

Caleb believed she had thrown it away months earlier.
