STORY PART 4 — He Married His Mistress Inside The Estate I Owned

4.9Editorial score

Almost.

Helena walked down the aisle without rushing.

She stopped beside the deed and looked at Ethan like he was a stain on a contract.

‘Your emergency board meeting concluded twenty minutes ago,’ she said.

‘You have been removed as interim chief executive pending investigation.’

Ethan laughed again, but there was no sound behind it.

‘You cannot remove me from my own company.’

‘It was never only yours,’ Helena said.

That was when the room finally understood.

The wedding was not just interrupted.

The stage itself had been taken away.

The house, the money, the company, the audience, all the things Ethan had gathered to prove he had upgraded his life, were now evidence against him.

Sabrina looked at the guests, then at the cameras, then at Ethan.

Her calculation was visible.

She had attached herself to a winning man.

Now she was standing beside a liability.

‘You told me she was gone,’ she whispered.

Ethan turned on her with pure contempt.

‘You were fine with gone when you thought you were getting the house.’

Her father stood up.

‘Sabrina.’

She flinched, but did not move toward him.

Her eyes had landed on the tablet again, on the frozen image of me hunched over Sophie in the snow.

For the first time, Sabrina looked at my baby instead of my face.

Good.

Some shame should have a target.

Margaret tried one last time.

‘Grace,’ she said, changing her voice into something soft and poisonous, ‘think of Sophie.

Do you really want her father ruined?’

I had imagined that question in the hospital.

I had imagined it while nurses checked Sophie’s temperature every hour.

I had imagined it while my stitches pulled and my milk came in and my husband’s lawyer emailed me a petition claiming I was dangerous.

For Sophie, I wanted many things.

A warm bed.

A safe home.

A mother who did not confuse silence with grace.

A future where no man could lock her outside and call it strength.

‘I am thinking of Sophie,’ I said.

Then I handed the baby to Mrs.

Ramirez.

She had slipped into the pavilion behind Helena, still wearing her church coat and snow boots.

She took Sophie as gently as if accepting a crown.

With both hands free, I signed the document Daniel placed on the small table the florist had used for ceremony candles.

Ethan watched the pen move.

‘What is that?’ he demanded.

‘Revocation of your access to all trust-held residences,’ Daniel said.

‘Including Caldwell House, the city apartment, and the lake property.’

Margaret made a choking sound.

‘My things are in that house,’ she said.

‘They will be inventoried and returned,’ Daniel replied.

‘Under supervision.’

Sabrina finally pulled off her engagement ring.

She did not throw it.

She was too image-conscious for that.

She placed it on the nearest chair like it had burned her.
