STORY PART 2 — He Married His Mistress Inside The Estate I Owned

4.9Editorial score

Daniel removed the first document and held it where Ethan could see the signature page.

‘Caldwell House,’ Daniel said, ‘is not owned by Margaret Caldwell.

It is not owned by Ethan Caldwell.

It is owned by Marlowe Grace Trust, through Caldwell Holdings, with Grace Caldwell as controlling trustee.’

Sabrina’s lips parted.

Margaret laughed too loudly.

‘Absurd.

My late husband bought this land.’

‘Your late husband lost the land to debt,’ Daniel said.

‘Grace’s inheritance repurchased it three years ago when Ethan’s company was six weeks from collapse.’

The room changed.

It was not loud.

It was worse.

It was the sound of people rearranging their loyalties without standing up.

Ethan’s eyes cut toward me.

For the first time that day, he was not looking at me as a problem.

He was looking at me as a witness.

‘Grace handled paperwork,’ he said.

‘That is all.

She did administrative tasks.’

I almost smiled.

Administrative tasks.

That was what he called the nights I stayed awake building the investor presentation while he practiced his founder speech in the mirror.

That was what he called the meetings where I explained the numbers he barely understood.

That was what he called the original operating agreement I signed because the first investors trusted my father’s name, not his.

Daniel slid out another document.

‘Caldwell Medical Technologies, Series A shareholder record,’ he said.

‘Founding equity: thirty-nine percent held by Ethan Caldwell, forty-six percent held by Grace Marlowe Caldwell, voting control attached to the Marlowe shares.’

The priest closed his book completely.

Sabrina turned to Ethan.

‘You told me she signed everything over during the separation.’

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

‘She did.’

‘No,’ I said softly.

‘I signed hospital intake papers while you were draining the account.’

A woman in the second row gasped.

I recognized her.

She had come to my baby shower and complimented Sabrina’s bracelet without realizing it was my anniversary gift from Ethan.

Margaret pointed at me.

‘She is unstable.

She was unstable that night too.

She screamed.

She threatened him.’

Daniel looked toward the investigator.

The investigator, Mr.

Hale, stepped forward with a black tablet.

He had the tired face of a man who had seen too much human ugliness to be surprised by it, but even he had been quiet when he first showed me the footage.

‘The exterior camera from the Ramirez property captured the porch at 11:42 p.m.,’ he said.

‘Audio enhanced.

Original file preserved.’

Ethan’s face changed so quickly that Sabrina saw it.

‘What camera?’ she asked.

Mr.

Hale tapped the screen.

The pavilion filled with Ethan’s voice.
