MILES: “I would never—”
LENA: “Your aunt walked into my clinic today with my mother’s debt in one hand and a contract in the other.”
Miles stopped.
LENA: “You don’t get the benefit of what you ‘would never’ do.”
From the counter, Adrian said nothing.
Miles nodded slowly.
MILES: “Okay.”
LENA: “And support gets handled independently. Not through Celeste. Not through Adrian. Not through promises made in a diner.”
MILES: “Okay.”
For the first time all night, Lena believed he understood that the answer was not forgiveness.
It was accountability.
Celeste made her countermove the next morning.
She sent Lena a revised offer.
The entire debt balance forgiven.
Six months of rent paid.
A cash payment large enough to make Lena’s hands shake.
In exchange, Lena would sign a statement saying Miles had no confirmed connection to the pregnancy and would have no future parental obligations.
Lena photographed every page.
Then she called Adrian.
LENA: “Your aunt put it in writing.”
There was a long pause.
ADRIAN: “Send it to me.”
LENA: “No.”
ADRIAN: “Lena—”
LENA: “I’m bringing it myself.”
That afternoon, she walked into Vale Shipping headquarters wearing her clean diner uniform because it was the best thing she owned.
Nobody laughed.
Adrian met her in the lobby.
LENA: “Where is she?”
ADRIAN: “Boardroom.”
Lena handed him the envelope.
LENA: “I want my name read exactly as it appears.”
Adrian opened the door.
Celeste sat at the long table with six directors and Miles.
She looked at Lena, then at the envelope, and understood.
Adrian placed the debt-purchase authorization beside Celeste’s revised offer.
No secret recording.
No mysterious witness.
Just Celeste’s own signature on two documents created less than twenty-four hours apart.
One said Lena’s debts were purchased for “settlement leverage.”
The other offered money if she protected Miles from responsibility.
Adrian did not give a speech.
He did not need one.
The directors could read.
Celeste tried anyway.
CELESTE: “I was protecting this family.”
Lena stood near the door.
LENA: “By trying to purchase my decision.”
Celeste looked at her.
CELESTE: “You have no idea what three children will cost.”
Lena’s hand tightened around the strap of her tote.
LENA: “I know exactly what I’m afraid of.”
She nodded toward the papers.
LENA: “That doesn’t make you entitled to use it.”
Miles spoke next.
