STORY PART 4 — He Married My Best Friend While Trying to Take My House

4.9Editorial score

Maybe Claire signed something months ago and forgot.

She signs documents constantly.”

I looked at him.

“You told me five minutes ago you would own this house Monday morning.”

“I was angry.”

“Your father said it.”

“He misunderstood.”

His father stepped toward him.

“Ethan.

Stop talking.”

Ethan spun around.

“You’re the one who said Monday.”

A few guests audibly inhaled.

Caroline’s eyes sharpened.

His father’s face hardened.

“I said stop talking.”

That was the first crack between them.

Daniel had warned me this might happen.

People who coordinate in private often become careless once they realize they may be blamed individually.

Loyalty becomes a calculation.

Madison stepped away from Ethan.

The movement was small, but everyone saw it.

“I didn’t know anything about forged paperwork,” she said.

Ethan stared at her.

“Madison.”

“Don’t say my name like that.

You told me Claire had already agreed to transfer the house.”

“Because you knew the plan.”

“I knew you said she was going to sign it.”

“You helped upload the identification.”

Madison went white.

Silence dropped across the lawn.

Ethan seemed to realize what he had said only after the words were already hanging in the air.

Daniel didn’t react.

He simply looked toward one of the officers.

The officer made a note.

Madison’s voice shook.

“He’s lying.”

“Am I?” Ethan snapped.

“Who sent me the scan of her passport?”

Her eyes flew toward me.

I knew immediately.

Three months earlier, Madison and I had discussed taking a trip together.

She had offered to organize reservations and asked me to send a passport copy so she could check name details.

At the time, I had thought nothing of it.

Now the memory felt contaminated.

“You used that?” I asked.

Madison’s lips parted, but nothing came out.

I didn’t raise my voice.

“You sat in my kitchen, drank my coffee, and told me I was paranoid about Ethan.

Then you gave him my identification?”

“Claire, it wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

“Which part?”

She started crying.

I felt nothing when the tears came.
