STORY PART 3 — My Husband Locked Us Inside—But Our Daughter Stole His Secret Phone

He changed the setup after I installed it.”

Derek pointed at Nora through the front window.

“My wife is unstable,” he yelled.

“She did this.

She’s been threatening to destroy the house for months.”

Nora heard every word through the porch camera.

Even now, with police surrounding him and his daughter trapped inside, Derek was building a story in which he was the victim.

The rear officer smashed the kitchen window.

Glass fell inward, and fresh air rushed into the room.

He reached through, unlocked the frame, and forced the window higher.

“Police! Come toward my voice!”

Nora did not move.

The timer showed two minutes and forty seconds.

An open window might reduce the concentration of gas, but a single spark could still ignite it.

She had to stop the flow.

She wrapped both hands around the steel clip and leaned back with her full weight.

The valve groaned.

Then it turned.

The hiss beneath the floor weakened.

Nora pulled again until the handle reached the closed position.

The sound stopped.

She grabbed Lily, crawled to the broken window, and lifted her into the officer’s arms.

Then she climbed through after her, cutting her forearm on a shard still lodged in the frame.

Outside, cold air struck her face.

Lily threw both arms around her neck.

Behind them, another officer entered the basement with the fire department’s hazardous-materials team.

They disconnected the timer with forty-eight seconds remaining.

Derek watched from the driveway as Nora and Lily were wrapped in blankets.

His wrists were not yet cuffed.

He had begun performing for the officers, speaking slowly, shaking his head as if burdened by a wife whose behavior had finally become impossible to hide.

“She has anxiety episodes,” he said.

“She misinterprets things.

Check her medical records.”

Nora stared at him.

For years, Derek had called her dramatic whenever she questioned unexplained charges, late-night absences, or sudden changes to their finances.

He had encouraged her to see a therapist after she discovered messages from a woman named Celeste.

When Nora asked whether he was having an affair, he had said her suspicion proved she needed help.

Now she understood that those conversations had not merely been cruel.

They had been preparation.

He had been creating a documented history he could use if she ever accused him.

An officer approached Nora.

“Your husband says the phone belongs to the contractor.”

Nora handed him the device.

“It unlocked with my daughter’s birthday.

His fingerprint is saved in the security settings.

The messages include photographs of our house, a payment receipt, and instructions to make our deaths look accidental.”

Derek’s expression changed when the officer carried the phone toward an evidence bag.

“That is not mine,” he said.

Lily stepped forward before Nora could stop her.

“You left it outside my room,” she said.

“I heard you laughing.”

The driveway went silent.

Derek looked at his daughter, not with shame, but with calculation.

“Sweetheart, you were dreaming.”

Lily moved behind Nora.
