STORY PART 2 — My Wife Called Mom Incompetent—Then the Doctor Opened My File

4.9Editorial score

Mom’s jaw tightened.

“I remember you taking my phone.”

Laura turned to the doctor with a tired expression.

“You see what I’ve been dealing with?”

I watched the performance from a few feet away and understood why it had worked on neighbors.

Laura never sounded cruel when another person was watching.

She sounded exhausted.

Responsible.

Almost heroic.

But she had made one mistake.

She had become so confident in the story that she had stopped considering what evidence might exist outside it.

The doctor opened the next section of my file.

I had printed still images from the recovered security footage.

They showed Laura entering Mom’s room carrying documents.

They showed her coming out with papers.

One sequence showed Mom standing in the doorway while Laura blocked her path.

The footage had no useful audio, and the clearest details weren’t enough by themselves to prove everything that had happened.

But they did prove something important.

Mom had not been wandering helplessly through the house.

She had repeatedly been confined to one room while Laura controlled who could reach her.

Laura stared at the images.

“Those clips are completely out of context.”

“Then give us the context,” I said.

She looked at me.

“I was trying to keep her safe.”

“From what?”

“From herself.”

“Why did you take her phone?”

“Because she kept calling people and confusing them.”

“Why remove the television?”

Laura hesitated.

Only for a second.

“It agitated her.”

“Why redirect her bank alerts to your email?”

Her face changed again.

“She asked me to.”

Mom spoke quietly.

“No, I didn’t.”

Laura turned on her.

“You don’t remember half the things you ask me to do.”

The words landed differently now.

Not like concern.

Like a weapon she’d used too many times.

The doctor glanced down at Mom’s sleeves.

“May I ask about the injuries mentioned in this file?”

Laura inhaled sharply.

“She hurts herself.

I told you that.”

Mom stared at the floor for several seconds.

I didn’t push her.

Neither did the doctor.

Finally, she pulled one sleeve back.

The bruising around her wrist was unmistakable.

Then she exposed the other wrist.

Laura immediately began talking.
