STORY PART 2 — He Denied Four Children Until the Sealed Court File Opened

A low murmur moved through the room.

Marcus’s father, Daniel, slowly removed his glasses.

“You never told me that.”

Patricia looked at him with open shame.

“Marcus said Kesha was trying to trap him.

I believed my son because believing him was easier than admitting what he had done.”

Marcus stepped toward her.

“You are confused.”

“No.” Patricia’s voice broke.

“I have spent eight years pretending I was.”

Ashley moved away from Marcus as though the distance between them might protect her from the truth.

I opened the folder.

On top were four certified birth certificates.

Beneath them lay prenatal records, NICU discharge summaries, copies of emails, and envelopes marked RETURN TO SENDER.

At the bottom was a sealed order from a Colorado family court requiring Marcus to provide a DNA sample within forty-eight hours.

Marcus glanced at the documents and then at the guests.

“Anyone can print papers.”

“Then the test will clear you,” I said.

His expression tightened.

I called my attorney, Elena Ruiz, and placed the phone on speaker.

“The clerk is standing by,” Elena said.

“We only need Mr.

Reynolds to acknowledge service.”

Marcus leaned over the table.

His gaze fell on the second sealed page beneath the testing order.

The name printed there was not mine.

It was Daniel Reynolds’s.

Marcus went white.

Daniel had been voluntarily added as a comparison participant.

Three weeks earlier, after receiving a formal notice that four possible biological grandchildren existed, he had quietly provided a sample through an accredited laboratory.

He had not contacted me directly.

He had simply instructed his attorney to cooperate.

The preliminary grandparentage analysis was already complete.

It showed an overwhelming probability that the children were Daniel’s biological grandchildren.

It was not the final legal determination of Marcus’s paternity, but it destroyed his claim that I had arrived with four unrelated children chosen for their resemblance.

Daniel read the report twice.

Then he sat down.

“My grandchildren,” he said, barely above a whisper.

Olivia looked up at me.

“Is he Grandpa?”

Daniel’s face folded with an emotion so raw that several guests looked away.

“I think I am,” he said.

“I hope you will let me prove I can deserve the name.”

Marcus snatched the paper from his father’s hand.

“This proves nothing about me.

Dad could have another son.

There could be some relative no one knows about.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Listen to yourself.”

“I am protecting this family.”

“No,” Ashley said.

“You are protecting the story you told me.”

She crossed the room, picked up the velvet ring box, and placed it in Marcus’s hand.

He looked at it as if he had forgotten what it was.

“You invited Kesha here because you wanted me to see how completely you had moved on,” Ashley continued.
